The March
Organizers of The March, the first cancer survivors'
demonstration in Washington, are urging all whose lives are touched
by cancer to do something in their local communities on Saturday September
26, 1998.
A speaker for National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS) said:
"We hope that there are candlelight vigils, rallies, whatever. I spoke
to a woman who is doing a craft show that benefits the local children's
cancer ward."
Seventy US cities have started planning local events for
The March. The cities include San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco,
Sacramento and Seattle.
Organizers say local events make "the political types take notice" and
"shine a light on people and organizations in every community." "When
national media are looking to cover events like this, more often than
not, it's the local stories that have the biggest impact." Local media
and businesses, the speaker added, "need to know about the terrific
peer support program ... in the community where people get cancer."
It makes sense to bring The March to the local scene since that's where
"families, friends, and coworkers" are called on for help if cancer
strikes.
Meanwhile plans for the Washington event are cooking. The March campaign
expect Congress will still be in session. They urge cancer survivors
from every region of the country to come to Washington as representatives
(or delegates) of their communities and grassroots organizations. NCCS
is asking people who come to DC to make appointments to see their Congressional
representatives on the Friday, September 25, 1998.
Organizers are making placards to display on The Mall during the September
26th event in DC. These placards "will be in celebration of survivors
or in memory of those we have lost to cancer. The idea is to have a
visual representation of the impact that cancer has had and continues
to have on our society." Also on display will be The Ribbon of Hope,
which has been travelling round the country for the past two years gathering
signatures. For more information visit the
