About Dave
I will be 60 in February, 2000. Diagnosed March 1998 with PCa, Gleason
7(3,4), T2A tumour, PSA 20.7, negative bone scan.
I opted for surgery
after three months of hormone therapy. The surgery was done July 2, 1998
in Edmonton. I have had a good recovery...fully continent and there is a
gradual improvement in the area of ED. I have let nature take its course
and I have high hopes that I will regain much of what was lost.....
We moved to Fort Smith in 1979. I was on a two year secondment from the
Dept. of Indian and Northen Affairs ( Ottawa) -- and never went back!
I am married ( 34 yrs to the same loving person, Daryl), have two
children and 4 grandsons.
Retired in June 1996, hoping to have my own little business, but health
problems kept getting in the way.....
I taught high school, evolved into a
counsellor at a community college level and trained native counsellors to
work in schools throughout the NWT. Most of my career centered around the
education of northen native peoples. I enjoyed this immensely...
Being diagnosed with PCa really shook me up. I had been totally
ignorant of prostate health and the need to start checking things out
around age 50. With the high PSA, I was totally freaked....and I feel
lucky to have found a doctor who was willing to give the surgery a shot at
a "cure". I don't regret that decision at all....
I just don't want to see younger men having to face a similar
situation. It was quite an emotional
roller coaster.
